Man Utd trigger one-year option to keep defender at Old Trafford

Manchester United have triggered the one-year option to keep young defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old was approaching the final months of his deal but according to the MEN, the Red Devils have extended his contract to 2021.

The extension follows United’s decision to activate the two-year option on Eric Bailly and one-year extension in Nemanja Matic’s contract, although United are also said to be in negotiations about a new deal for the Serbia international.

Angel Gomes, 19, is the only first-team squad member out of contract at the end of the season and United do not have a one-year option on his deal.

Holland international Fosu-Mensah has not played for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men since the final day of the 2016-17 season against Crystal Palace, having spent the last two seasons on loan at Palace and then Fulham.

Solskjaer had shown promise with his previous signings, with Daniel James, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka showing decent form in their debut seasons.

United largely struggled before the turn of the year, though, enduring their worst start to a league season in 30 years.

However, Fernandes arrived in a big-money move from Sporting Lisbon and has played a key role in the Red Devils going 11 matches unbeaten before the season was brought to a halt. Read more…
