Man Utd turned down £2m move for star who now has world-record valuation

Manchester United could have signed a star young defender for £86million less than his current valuation, according to a report.

French centre-back Dayot Upamecano has made 14 Bundesliga appearance for Leipzig this season, with a further four coming in the Europa League.

Recent reports suggested that Napoli are set to open talks with RB Leipzig over a deal for the long-term Red Devils target.

The Serie A side are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements and may be about to snap up a player linked with United and Barcelona throughout January.

Radio CRC state that Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has called RB Leipzig to sound out on the availability of the 20-year-old.

If the latest report from Mirror Football is to be believe, United will be kicking themselves should Upamecano make a big money move as they had the chance to sign him back in 2015.

According to the player’s agent, Thierry Martinez, United was “the club that has made him dream since he was a kid,” and explained how the deal fell through.

“An intermediary met with us, but between the project she presented us and what was actually going to happen.

“A flat was promised, but that changed to a host family with only six return trips for his parents.

“When you uproot a player at such a young age, that isn’t enough. I wanted Dayot to have a stable emotional balance off the pitch.”

Upamecano currently has a release clause stands at £88m which would make him the most expensive defender ever should a club choose to trigger it.
