Owen Hargreaves says Manchester United should be “quietly confident” as they embark on their return to the Champions League.

The Red Devils will face Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir in Group H this term.

The group is one of the toughest to come out of Friday’s draw, with Liverpool avoiding the big European guns.

Speaking to BT Sport, however, Hargreaves said two signings could help United succeed and top the standings.

“I think they can be confident, quietly confident,” the former midfielder said. “PSG are the strongest team in the group, but Man United are the second strongest team in the group.

“Leipzig have a brilliant young manager and he’ll relish playing against Manchester United. But, look, they’re not firing on all cylinders right now and hopefully they can get a couple of players in.

“It’s not ideal, the group that they’ve got, but hopefully they can go into it, get a couple of players, and finish if not first, finish second.”

However United have so far only added midfielder Donny van de Beek to their ranks. Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is after a new winger, with Jadon Sancho his top target.

Borussia Dortmund though are standing firm on his £108million price tag, leading United to look elsewhere. Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa is now on their shortlist but an approach for the Italian has failed.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference, Solskjaer was unable to instil much confidence about potential new acquisitions. The transfer window for trades across Europe closes on Monday at 11pm.

Man Utd meet PSG after memorable last-16 clash

United and PSG met two seasons ago in one of the most memorable last-16 Champions League ties.

PSG won the first leg but a dramatic second leg in Paris saw Solskjaer’s men pull off a miraculous comeback.

Leipzig, meanwhile, knocked Tottenham out last season in the knockout rounds. However they begin the new season without Timo Werner, who will play in the competition for Chelsea.
