Man Utd urged by top scout to make £40m move for England man

Manchester United sent one of their top scouts to watch Swansea City star Alfie Mawson last week, according to a report.

The Sun claims that Jose Mourinho is looking to bolster his defence in the upcoming summer transfer window, and has earmarked the England international as a possible target.

United sent a top scout to watch Mawson in the Swans’ 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, and he received rave reviews for his performance.

The 24-year-old received his first senior call-up to the England team during the last round of international friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.

Spurs have also expressed an interest in signing the former Barnsley man, but have been told it would cost them over £40million.

With doubts surrounding the futures of both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, and with Victor Lindelof failing to impress so far, Mourinho is looking to add to his options in central defence.

They have also been linked with a move for Toby Alderweireld, whose days at Tottenham appear to be numbered after Mauricio Pochettino explained the Belgian’s ongoing absence from the first team.

Alderweireld has not played a Premier League match for Tottenham since October, having first been sidelined by a hamstring complaint and then being involved in a dispute over a new contract at the club.
