Manchester United have ‘cooled’ their interest in signing Jadon Sancho and have earmarked Erling Haaland as their new top target, according to a report.

The Red Devils spent the best part of the previous transfer window chasing England winger Sancho. However, Borussia Dortmund’s £108million valuation eventually proved too steep a price.

Indeed, United bosses felt that spending such money in the current financial climate sent the wrong message.

Talk of a potential renewal in interest in Sancho from Old Trafford next summer has continued. According to the Sunday Mirror, however, those plans have cooled.

The newspaper notes that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had previously believed that Sancho could be the player to help his side become serious Premier League title contenders.

However, the source adds that such a title tilt is happening without Sancho; the Red Devils sit joint-top with Liverpool and have a game in hand on their arch-rivals.

What’s more, they have yet to play Jurgen Klopp’s side, with the clubs meeting later in January.

As such, United bosses believe that they have ‘dodged a bullet’ by avoiding paying the £108million fee. They are also ‘debating’ whether to go back in for Sancho next summer.

But their overarching feeling is that they feel ‘more convinced than ever’ that they should steer clear.

Indeed, the signing of Amad Diallo has made United feel ‘justified’. The Atalanta winger penned terms at Old Trafford in October but could make his move to Manchester this month.

However, the Serie A club have reportedly requested that the 18-year-old stays in Italy until the end of the season.

Instead of Sancho, though, Solskjaer has put the feelers out to trying again to sign fellow Norwegian Haalaand. United came close to landing him when he played for RB Salzburg but Dortmund captured his services last December.

Since then, the 20-year-old has scored 33 goals in 32 games for the Bundesliga club.

Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, proved to be United’s nemesis in their hunt for Haaland.

But the Sunday Mirror claims that Old Trafford chiefs would ‘privately’ be open to dealing with him again.

Haaland is currently injured with a hamstring problem.
