Man Utd fans debate Woodward’s transfer approach

Ed Woodward

I see United have offered 35m Euros for Fernandes with his club asking 60m. I said it seems to be our standard tactic to offer just over half of the asking price but you dispute that don’t you. Our offer has been rejected, surprise surprise.

Admitttedly this is from the Mirror, but it sums up what I believe has become our standard operating procedure.

The Red Devils are now hoping that the midfielder will put pressure on his club to sell him and that they will eventually have to part ways with Fernandes for the originally offered €35m. This means that if United are patient and manage to execute their plan they will make a saving of £23m.

One thing is certain, Fernandes won’t be flying out with the squad for their pre-season tour!

MacGuffin

Point is that it’s not just our tactic is it? It’s how negotiations are run.

Surprises me how Daniel Levy has been hailed as one of the best negotiators in the game for years yet he constantly low balls and haggles. Similarly, City have consistently haggled and ended up not signing (‘pulling out’) off plenty of deals over fees. In the same time we have been a laughing stock for blowing money hand over fist on fees and salaries. Now we’re taking a sensible approach at going in low and negotiating hard and people are complaining. I swear its getting boring as f*** on here. No perspective at all. Just whinge and criticise every thing the club does.

When you are the main club in for a player i.e. AWB and Fernandes, then it makes perfect sense to low ball and negotiate rather than pay an inflated fee. For the record, Sporting put a clause in his contract that they would pay the player €5m if they rejected an offer over €35m. That tells you were they seen his future transfer fee when they signed him. Now they want double after a good season and we are trying to negotiate and people are having a whinge.

Well said N1xer!

@n1xer – I think Levy is admired not for the bids he makes but the bids he refuses and thereby getting top dollar for his players.

Yes many clubs have put in a low bid but not sure its as low as 50% of asking price. These clubs have their valuation and pull out but they tend to do it soon. In contrast we tend to either end up paying close to the asking price or hang on hoping for player pressure to force the move and losing valuable time to get other options.

And I’m not sure it makes sense to make a bid so low its going to be laughed at and refused on the spot. It just means you waste time and can potentially anger the selling club or send a message to the player you are not serious about your interest (this often happens) and energise the player agent to look elsewhere.

And there is a risk of another club suddenly coming into the race and signing the player (This is what happened when Chelsea came in for Hazard.) or upping the price demands.

And the manager invariably likes his signings to be on the plane for the pre-season tour, which is made less likely if the club is playing chicken willing to take it to the wire of deadline day.

You talk about fans not having perspective and just whinging but your gripe is a generic one that is hard to counter because you are not specific. If a criticism is made and you counter that specific criticsm with reasons why it is not a valid criticism, then fair enough. It can be debated and resolved. But you dont do that. Every once is a while you toss out a generic moan about criticisms in general.

If you are happy with Uniteds lowball bids and transfer negotiations overall then join happy in applauding Ed. If you think criticism are unfounded then explain why. Explain to me why the pitfalls of “derisory” bids are not a concern or how the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Liverpool fans ecstatic with miracle worker Edwards

How does this man do it?? 18-20 million in the bank for Danny Ings official today. 20 million for Solanke. Comacho left recently for 5 million but with buy back clause and 20% sell on… Not to mention the other deals including bentenke and sakho, Jordan ibe, Kevin Stewart, brad jones. .. This guy must be a mentalist. At this rate Edwards is probably working hard to get a deal so that psg pay us to take mbappe off their hands.

mwake

He is very commercial. Thats for sure.

We have a clear commercial model, which we haven’t done for a long, long time.

Gul

Marko Grujic initial fee has been basically paid off from his loan fees too.
His value is now probably 3 times, at least, what it was and god knows how it will go up after another possible good season behind him.
Grujic may come back next season if Milner/Lallana move on but at 24 he’ll probably be sold.
Edwards and Klopp work hand in glove. It’s a great partnership and one we should protect at all costs.

Arsenal fans dissect Zaha rumours; Gunners overarching transfer policy

Zaha Aubameyang

So No Money FC are asking about Zaha hehe it must be slow today on the news front.

Not saying he worth £80m or more but since we apparently value Auba at £56m the we offer around £10m.

I think our squad will be identical to last season apart from more youngsters and some free players if we can even manage a sign on fee

muffler_1

Truthfully speaking,I rate zaha a lot but any club would be stupid to pay 80m for him.Is it a silly fee being demanded from palace? No,they are just doing what any team club would do to keep their prized asset, and we should actually learn from them. But to get that kind of money a player needs to achieve certain things like get 20+ goals consistently over a couple of seasons,or maybe overachieve with his team.Zaha has done neither,he shows potential but he can be shut out too.

I think 40m + one or two of our players should do.Maybe they’ll accept 50m + holding or chambers. Both can go as they’re overglorified and overrated.

To be honest though, nothing really excites me too much.I think people say all season this squad needs a mass overhaul but don’t actually understand the meaning of it.Signing Zaha alone won’t do s**t. And I’m not one of those people who’s like something’s better than nothing. This squad is a good 5-6 signings away just for challenging for the top 4.And unless kronke is willing to put 150m of his own money(which will never happen),that’s the core of all our problems and we must focus on getting him the f*** out of the club.

the specialone

Chambers I agree on not Holding there are defenders who should go before him.

Then again its a non issue Palace are not us who sells cheap.

I dislike Kroenke as much as you but I dont think we can get him out. Once Usmanov sold that chance kind of disappeared.

any chance we can stick ti the thread title? lets talk about transfers, targets or lack there of…..

palace wnat Jenkinson for £5m? thats tawdry as an offer, even if he is crap

steveosnakeeye

There aint any money to spend unless we sell.

Ivan kind of destroyed that and then jumped ship before it was public knowledge.

muffler_1

Have to laugh at media reports suggesting a 40m bid for zaha is a bit of a joke.
Sometimes i feel media creates a situation where the price range of the player is decided in itself. They also claim Apparently palace somehow have the upper hand.

Let me get this straight.Mahrez who had some fantastic seasons with leicester, winning the premier league and getting PFA player of the year at a similar age went for 60m to Man city.
Yet somehow zaha who has not scored more than 10 goals in the PL in a single season, not achieved anything extraordinary with palace, never been nominated for PL player of the season(if im correct?),desperately wants a move to Arsenal and most importantly dosen’t seem to have any other bidders than Arsenal somehow commands a fee in the region of 80m.

Nonsense.I feel due to previous Arsenal dealings the media look at Arsenal as a bit of a joke club, and laugh off most bids we submit for players which is a disadvantage for the club.If zaha is worth 80m according to palace, then chambers is worth atleast 25m considering the shocking fees going around espescially for english players in the market. They’d probably agree to a 70m figure if they want to act tough which is why i suggested 45m+chambers(25m) should do.
Like I said,no club would pay more than 50m cash for zaha.

the specialone

This transfer window is as usual a joke. We desperately need defensive and midfield reinforcements and we are supposedly after Zaha! What is the point of another forward? We do not lack goals but our defence is one of the worst we have ever had. Possibly Bellerin and Holding are the only ones worth persevering with in the future, but again, would either get into any of our rivals’ sides when fit? I do not think we are serious about Zaha anyway. The hierarchy must think fans are stupid. As if Palace, having received £50m for their right back would allow their best captain to leave for £10m less and in instalments? The club are throwing around supposed transfer bids knowing full well they will be rejected, but giving the impression they are trying. Remember Higuain and Suarez in previous years and then we signed Ozil instead in a panic. When we still had not signed a striker when the season was about to start?
Lastly, The Special Needs One, this is for you. You have been warned previously when anyone who countered your obsession with average players was called ” stupid”, “idiot”, “ignorant” etc. You also labelled a poster a “f..ing moron”. If you are unable to resist everyone outing you as the most clueless poster ever on this site without having a hissy fit, or calling people clowns you will soon be banned and the site will be a good one again. Now, go and support the good old US of A tonight when the ladies play soccer, won’t you?
