Manchester United will have to stump up a club-record £128million fee to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, according to a report.
The reported fee for the Atletico Madrod man would smash the £89.3million they paid for Paul Pogba in August 2016, who incidentally could be the man Niguez may replace.
Pogba’s future at United has been under the spotlight in recent months, with the player strongly linked with moves to both Real Madrid and his former club Juventus. The Spanish champions are reportedly ready to launch a fresh approach for the Frenchman’s services with January looming, amid claims they will have offer United two players in exchange and as a sweetener.
However, it seems United have ideas of their own and are said to seeking as much as £180m for a player, who is contracted to the club until 2021 but has shown precious few signs of wanting to sign an extension.
Pogba is still said to be injured and in fact has not kicked a ball for United since the end of September; Ole Gunnar Solskjaer maintains he will play again for United before the turn of the year.
Mundo Deportivo also claim that United are interested in signing Niguez but Atletico Madrid will demand £128m for the transfer.
Los Rojiblancos will be loathed to lose the 25-year-old, who has made 270 appearances, scoring 35 goals and providing 18 assists and who is a cornerstone of Atletico’s side.
He is under contract until 2026, but if United come armed with money received from the sale of Pogba, then Atleti may find £100m-plus hard to turn down for their academy graduate.
