Marc Overmars confirms startling Arsenal transfer faux pas

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has confirmed that Arsenal have turned down the opportunity to sign Hakim Ziyech.

Over the weekend BBC journalist David Ornstein told Arseblog that the Gunners had rejected a chance to sign the 26-year-old winger.

“Arsenal have analysed him and he’s not a player that they will be pursuing as far as I know,” said Ornstein, who also claimed the highly-rated Ajax star was available for around £30million.

Now those claims have been verified by former Gunners star Overmars, who also believes Ziyech is “better than Mesut Ozil”.

Overmars told Voetbal International: “I am a bit surprised that it is still so quiet around Hakim.

“I think he has played better every year and his statistics are exceptionally good.

“Many clubs are increasingly looking at that. They look more at the numbers than at what he shows and what is happening around him.

“I think Hakim Ziyech is better than Mesut Ozil. I would tell Arsenal: sell him and you will get Hakim for half the price. But they didn’t listen to me. So it could just be that he stays with Ajax.”

Ziyech, who contributed 21 goals and 24 assists for Ajax who won the Dutch league and reached the Champions League semi-finals also confirmed Matthijs de Ligt’s move to Juventus is close.

“The end is in sight,” he added.

“It is still about bank guarantees, Ajax is always very strict about that. I hope it goes quickly now, but they will work it out. They are Italians.”
