Rojo baffled by Solskjaer’s backtracking over Man Utd future

Marcos Rojo has said that he “didn’t understand” Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s comments insisting that the defender would be remaining at Old Trafford until the end of the season.

Having made only nine appearances for United all season, Rojo was linked with a move away from Manchester throughout January and eventually sealed a loan return to Estudiantes, where his career began.

However, Solskjaer was asked prior to the move and claimed that the Argentina international would be sticking around at Old Trafford.

Estudiantes confirmed Rojo’s move back to his home country two days later and the 29-year-old has explained that a desire to keep his place in the national team was the main motivation behind the loan switch.

“In March the qualifiers start and it is important to be on pace,” Rojo told a press conference (as reported by TNT via Sport Witness). “[Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni] told me that to be there I had to play, that’s why my idea was to leave Manchester and get this.

“When I had the OK of the club, the first one I called was my mother and said: ‘Don’t say anything’. Zero, she told me.

“She told everyone, ha. It was hard for the club to make my return difficult. We had been talking a lot.

“It was when the coach [Solskjaer] said that I was going to stay there. When he said that, it was already advanced. I didn’t understand why Solskjaer said it.”

Rojo recently revealed that he received many offers before deciding to move back to Estudiantes.

He said: “Many things came together. I need to play, return to my level, the family insisted, my old woman told me to come back.

“I had many offers to go to other clubs, but what better than being at home. I hope to be on the pitch as soon as possible.”
