Marcos Rojo says he had plenty of offers before returning home

Marcos Rojo says he had numerous offers to leave Manchester United last week before returning home with Estudiantes.

The defender sealed has returned to the Argentine club, where he started his career, on loan until the end of the season. And the 29-year-old has been welcomed with open arms with videos of Javier Mascherano and Juan Sebastian Veron championing his return.

Rojo will return to Old Trafford at the end of the season and he will then have 12 months remaining on his Old Trafford contract, with an extension highly unlikely.

Rojo, who looked unlikely to leave United after comments by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week, says he did have plenty of options before taking his mother’s advice and returning home.

“Many things came together. I need to play, return to my level, the family insisted, my old woman told me to come back. I had many offers to go to other clubs, but what better than being at home. I hope to be on the pitch as soon as possible,” said Rojo told El Intransigente via Sport Witness.

“I want to go to practice and be with the boys as soon as possible. I’m very happy. It’s something I dreamed of, there was a chance and it could be done. I talked to Sebastian quite a lot but one day my head clicked and I decided to return. It all came together.”

The 29-year-old, who arrived from Sporting Lisbon for £16m in 2014, has made 122 appearances for Manchester Unite, but he has struggled with injuries and has not featured for United since November.

“I suffered a lot of injuries lately, I went to the bench a lot. And I needed to compete and what better than to do it at home. Argentine football grew a lot and this is going to be a beautiful challenge. I talked with almost everyone and they helped me at this time. I don’t know what to say to the fans, it’s incredible,” added Rojo.

Rojo’s move looked unlikely last month after Solskjaer said a transfer for him looked unlikely.

Solskjaer said: “I wouldn’t think so. Marcos has been injured and has been working to get back and get fit again. At the moment it doesn’t look like it, no.”
