Pundit rips into Man Utd man, says Chelsea making a huge mistake

Angel Gomes Man Utd TEAMtalk

Chelsea have been warned they are making a huge mistake by attempting to sign Manchester United’s Angel Gomes.

Gomes looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer after starting in the Academy with the club when he was six.

Despite United offering Gomes a new deal earlier in the season, worth a reported £30,000 a week, the club and player have been unable to agree on terms, with Gomes entering the final month of his current contract.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the midfielder has doubts over whether he will make it in Solskjaer’s side, amid continued reports about the Norwegian’s plans to bolster his ranks with exciting young talent and Chelsea re interested.

ESPN transfer pundit Gabriel Marcotti though thinks Frank Lampard has already got far better options in his midfield and believes the Blues are wasting their time pursuing the 19-year-old.

Marcotti also believes the 1.6m midfielder does not have the right physical attributes or technical ability to be a success in the Premier League, saying: “In some of the worst United teams in recent memory, he can’t get in the team”.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Marcotti said: “I think if you’re Manchester United, you look at this and say ‘yeah, you may be a promising player, but this is the offer. This is what you’ve shown me you’re worth’. I think a lot of these stories are coming out because he has a new advisor.

“These guys have asset value, right? In the sense that you can bump [the transfer value] up in a few years, sell them, he’s homegrown and blah blah blah.

“I don’t think that should come into consideration for United, because they’ve got money.

“Unless you think this guy is going to be able to contribute to your team and not be someone who sits on the bench for three years and you sell to Newcastle for £10million, don’t mess around with this. It sets a bad precedent.

“£30,000-per-week for what this person has contributed so far, and what his future is…

“I’m not saying if you’re short you can’t play football, Messi has shown that, but given the position he plays… they have to have something else.

“They have to either be extremely technically gifted, or be super quick or super smart. He’s not any of those things.

“In some of the worst United teams in recent memory, he can’t get in the team.”

With Christian Pulisic, new boy Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi already at the club, Marcotti cannot see the sense in bringing in Gomes.

Marcotti added: “For Chelsea, you’ve got Hudson-Odoi, you’ve got Pulisic, you’ve got Ziyech. Do you need him? I don’t think so.

“Well done to United, stay strong, don’t give him any more money.

“Plus, if he leaves it won’t be for free, they’ll get some compensation for him. They’ll get some money.”
