Marcus Rashford at the double as he steps up Man Utd comeback

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford (centre) celebrates scoring his side's third goal of the game with Bruno Fernandes (left) and Anthony Martial during the Premier League match at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.

Marcus Rashford pushed his claims for a return to Manchester United action after scoring twice on Wednesday in a behind closed doors friendly.

The England man, who has been out of action since undergoing shoulder surgery after Euro 2020, hit a brace in a 3-0 win over Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

The 23-year-old returned to training last week and made the next step in his recovery with some game time against Rovers.

Rashford confirmed the operation took place on August 6 in a social media post that featured an image of his left arm in a sling and shoulder in a bandage.

“Thank you for all the well wishes,” Rashford posted. “I had my surgery on Friday morning and everything went very well.

“A little sore but other than that I’m feeling good. Hope you’re all having a great day!”

Rashford’s return could well put him into contention to face Leicester City a week on Saturday.

“So good to get some minutes under my belt today,” tweeted Rashford.

The winger has been working hard at Carrington this week with United’s non-international players.

The game also gave Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray the chance to give some of his fringe players some game time.

Sancho place under threat

Meanwhile, one man who could see his own game time limited when Rashford does return is Jadon Sancho.

Former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor says Sancho will have to pick his form up quickly or face being left on the subs bench.

“I’m worried because the big man Rashford’s on his way back,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT. “If you’ve not started in the Premier League and Rashford’s coming back, then he’s going to be even further down the pecking order.

“Rashford will come straight back into the team with Greenwood on the right and Ronaldo in the middle.”
