Suitors from two top European leagues join race for Man Utd outcast

Two clubs have stepped forward in the race to sign Timothy Fosu-Mensah after he failed to accept a contract offer from Manchester United, according to a report.

Fosu-Mensah has been a United player since joining their academy in 2014, but has found little gametime.

He spent the 2017-18 season out on loan at Crystal Palace and the following campaign on loan at Fulham. Since returning to United, injuries have hampered his progress.

Despite having recovered from those setbacks, he is still struggling for minutes. So far this season, he has only started one Premier League game and has come on as a substitute in two Champions League matches.

Fosu-Mensah is struggling to dislodge Aaron Wan-Bissaka from the right-back role. Furthermore, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently moved Victor Lindelof across in defence to cover for the Englishman, rather than turning to the former Ajax youth product.

Therefore, it appears Fosu-Mensah’s days are numbered at Old Trafford. However, the club did recently offer him a surprise extension to his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

According to an update from Football Insider, though, Fosu-Mensah has not accepted the new proposal. Therefore, he could sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January.

German, French teams want Fosu-Mensah

The report names two clubs who are interested. It is claimed that Marseille and Hertha Berlin would be keen to take the defender.

Marseille are looking for reinforcements that would help them catch up with Ligue 1 leaders Lyon. They have been unable to capitalise on their rivals PSG’s mixed form.

Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin are in a relegation battle in the Bundesliga. They could try to sign Fosu-Mensah to help their fight – although any deal may simply be in advance for the summer.
