Martinez hails Eto’o as a gift

Eto’o’s impact on the team has been steadily growing and he was outstanding in last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Burnley, scoring twice and coming within the width of a post of a third.

The 33-year-old joined Everton on a free transfer from Chelsea this summer and Martinez revealed the veteran’s experience has had a hugely positive impact on the dressing room.

Experience

“To have Samuel Eto’o at our football club is like a gift from the footballing gods,” he said. “To have someone of his experience is the perfect ingredient for our young players.

“I’m really excited to see how well Samuel can adapt in the second half of the season and finish strong. His experience and know-how have already been very important in the European games for example.

“I thought the finishes against Burnley looked like the old good times of Samuel Eto’o and they were a real gift.”

Eto’o is currently tied with Romelu Lukaku and Steven Naismith atop the Everton goalscoring charts with four, despite spending far less time on the pitch and starting just five matches this season.

Impressed

Martinez revealed he has been hugely impressed with Eto’o’s dedication to training and believes Everton offer the perfect platform for the former Barcelona star to display his talents.

“When I look at Samuel every day, he comes in with real standards and he always wants more work and he does it with style and in a way that everyone can learn from,” he said.

“That’s what I think Everton can give to Samuel – a real important chapter in his career. He has a massive influence on the people around him but he can really enjoy his football and satisfy his day-to-day work.”

With Lukaku nursing what Martinez described as ‘a couple of heavy knocks’ from the Burnley game, Eto’o may be in line to start against Swansea on Saturday, as Everton look for their third consecutive Premier League win.
