Leeds legend fears January Man Utd raid would send worrying message

Dean Henderson, Lee Grant

Nigel Martyn is concerned that Leeds pursuing a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson will have a negative effect on their dressing room.

Henderson impressed during his two seasons on loan at Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, helping them win promotion to the Premier League. The Blades then finished in an impressive ninth position last term.

However, the 23-year-old stopper has since returned to Old Trafford and barely played for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men. Indeed, he has just three appearances in all competitions this season.

According to a weekend report in The Sun, Henderson is keen on a loan exit again – despite denials from Solskjaer.

The stopper needs regular game time to boost his chances of becoming England No.1 for next summer’s Euros.

It is understood that Leeds and Brighton could look into signing the player on loan in the new year. But former Whites stopper Martyn, who made more than 270 appearances for the club, has his reservations.

He believes that while Henderson would be a good signing he would also upset the club’s current shot-stoppers.

“He would be a good signing, given how well he played for Sheffield United,” Martyn told The Boot Room, as cited by MOT.

Kiko Casilla Leeds

“It would be harsh on [Illan] Meslier, but he’s only 20. He’s one for the future. I’d like a more senior goalkeeper, but there is no reason to change it.

“If they go after Henderson, it’s worrying for [Kiko] Casilla. It means he is not turning to him, and if you’re trying to get Henderson on loan – it needs to be with a view to buying it. If Man United don’t want to sell, you’re upsetting your goalkeeping department.

“If they were in to buy him, and Man United were to let him go – I would be happier that route. To get him on loan it doesn’t send the best vibes to Meslier. It also says to Kiko that you aren’t good enough.”

Meslier has impressed for Leeds this season, despite Bielsa’s men having the second-worst defensive record in the division.

Leeds star poised for new deal

Leeds are reportedly set to offer Ezgjan Alioski a new long-term contract and hope he pens the deal before the new year.

The 28-year-old has become a vital member of the Leeds first team, making seven appearances and four starts this season. He enjoyed 125 outings across three seasons in the Championship and has bagged 20 goals in all competitions.

The Macedonia international is now in the final year of his contract in West Yorkshire. That means he would be free to start negotiating with other clubs in January but Leeds hope it won’t happen.

Football Insider are reporting that the left-sided star will be offered £30,000 per week on a four-year deal. Marcelo Bielsa’s men have shown faith in established players in recent times. Read more…
