Matip to be offered to Newcastle
Newcastle finished with the second worst defensive record in the Premier League season having conceded 63 goals, but the Magpies are looking to strengthen in that area over the summer after Mike Ashley promised to make funds available.
According to the Newcastle Chronicle they will be offered Matip, who could be available for around £10million this summer heading into the final year of his contract.
The 23-year-old, who has spent his entire career at Schalke, has previously been linked with Liverpool and Manchester City.
Newcastle will be able to add Jamaal Lascelles to their squad for next season after his loan spell at Nottingham Forest, but Mike Williamson is expected to move on and is said to be attracting interest from the Championship.
