Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi says he has joined Hertha Berlin on loan to develop as a player and help the Bundesliga side take the “next step”.

Guendouzi has moved to Germany after being frozen out of Mikel Arteta‘s plans in north London. Indeed he has not played since he grabbed Brighton striker Neal Maupay’s throat in June.

However he told Hertha’s official website that he intends to get back on track with a move across Europe.

“The talks with the management convinced me that this is the right move,” the 21-year-old said.

“Not only do I want to develop further on a personal level, but I also want to help the club take the next step.

“I’m buzzing to start life in Berlin as a Hertha player!”

Hertha sporting director Michael Preetz added: “Despite his young age, Matteo’s experience of almost 60 Premier League appearances adds even more versatility to our midfield.

“He adds aspects to our game that will improve us even further.”

Guendouzi is one of several players Arsenal are willing to let go of before Monday’s transfer deadline. Left-back Sead Kolasinac is among them but a move to Bayer Leverkusen looks unlikely.

Arsenal released a statement on Guendouzi’s departure earlier on Monday.

The club said: “Everyone at Arsenal wishes Matteo well for the season.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal expect to complete a deal to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey before the cut-off.

Ghana international Partey has been a top target for the Gunners throughout the window but Arteta’s side have decided to make a late move.

Arteta confident he has Arsenal backing

Arteta has said he is confident that he has the backing of his superiors as Arsenal look to add signings and continue their progression.

He said: “Believe me, the ownership and the board and doing everything they can to maximise the resources and make this club successful. I have 100 per cent backing for them. Whatever we can do, they are willing to do it, to support us.

“Whatever we can add of course we will do it. But we have to be realistic. The people here are supportive.

“Whoever jumps in the boat will be welcome. But we all have a very clear direction and purpose to drive our goals.”
