McNair eager for United return

The 19-year-old defender last featured for United in February’s defeat at Swansea and recognises how difficult it is to break into Louis van Gaal’s plans when there is a fully-fit back-line ahead of him.

He told MUTV. “Every day I’m coming in and trying to impress the manager and all his staff. Hopefully I can get as many games as I can towards the end of the season.

“I’m training with world class players every day – that’s only going to make me better.”

McNair gained his first senior cap in a 1-0 friendly defeat against Scotland, nine days after playing and scoring in United U21s win at Everton.

“I’ve got a lot of friends in the U21s,” McNair added. “They are doing really well and it was good to get some match fitness with them.”

The Northern Irishman also echoed captain Wayne Rooney’s thoughts on the game this weekend, admitting the 2-1 victory at Anfield before the international break will only be valuable if United win against Aston Villa on Saturday.

“If we drop points to Aston Villa then the win against Liverpool won’t be worth all that much,” he added.
