Premier League teams have ‘approached’ Barcelona star Memphis Depay over a summer move to England, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The former Manchester United man hit 76 goals in 178 games for Lyon after leaving Old Trafford in January 2017. However, last season he revealed his desire to move on from the French club to make the next step in his career.
Barcelona soon came calling as they viewed the Dutch forward as an ideal capture. Due to him running down his contract, it would not cost Barca much to agree a deal.
He officially joined the Blaugrana in June 2021 by signing a two-year contract at the Nou Camp.
Depay has gone on to register 12 goals in 34 games so far this campaign. He has not quite reached the heights expected of him but still boasts a decent record in Spain.
Despite the 28-year-old only signing for Barca recently, rumours are already suggesting he could leave this summer.
With Barca looking into a move for Arsenal centre-back Gabriel, Depay has been touted as a potential player to go the opposite way. Using him in a player-plus-cash deal would help Barca afford the deal amid their financial struggles.
A move to the Emirates could make sense as Mikel Arteta, along with technical director Edu, is on the look out for a new centre-forward.
Memphis Depay wanted by English clubs
Romano provides an update on Depay’s situation. He claims the 77-cap Netherlands international has received ‘approaches’ from numerous Prem clubs in recent weeks.
But the transfer guru doesn’t reveal exactly which teams they are, and claims nothing is advanced just yet.
As such, any interested parties will need to step up the chase if they want to sign Depay over the summer.
During a recent interview, the star was asked about his future in Catalonia. He said: “I came here at Barcelona with the desire to play for the team – and of course I want to feel important here for several years.”
Depay is likely to feature in Barca’s next match. They travel to Real Betis in La Liga on Saturday evening.
