Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to sign ‘perfect’ Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer, if they want to challenge City for the title next season.

The Red Devils are expected to be in the market for a new No.9, as well as a centre-back, with Kane and Borussia Dortmund goal machine Erling Haaland both on their radar. Kane has scored more than 200 goals for Spurs since making his first-team debut back in 2011, while he’s also notched 34 times for England.

Reports have emerged recently that the 27-year-old is considering quitting the club if they don’t qualify for the Champions League.

Chairman Daniel Levy would demand a king’s ransom for the attacker. However, Merson thinks the Red Devils should pull out all the stops to get their man.

He told Sky Sports: “I just think he’s perfect for Manchester United.

“If Manchester United want to challenge Manchester City over the next three or four years, they will have to have a Harry Kane.

“They have to have a centre-forward. In my opinion.”

Scholes would go Haaland over Kane

While Merson thinks Kane is the man for United, club legend Paul Scholes would go a different route.

The former England midfielder thinks there is more avlue in land Dortmund star Haaland instead.

Speaking on the the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel last month, Scholes said: “He’s [Haaland] the best striker out there in the world, without a shadow of a doubt. it’s ridiculous what he’s doing. If you sign him now you’ll get 10 years of him.

Erling Haaland Borussia Dortmund goal celeb

“With Harry Kane, at 28, 29, he’s in the peak of his career. But you’re talking two or three years as a top-class striker.

“When you get to 31, 32, you probably lose your legs a little bit, start to drop deep. He’s started to do a little bit now actually.

“As for Haaland he’s going to cost a lot more money, they’re both going to cost a lot of money. But I think if you’re looking to the future in the next few years Haaland has to be the one.”
