Mesut Ozil has taken a huge cut in his salary to realise his “dream” transfer to Fenerbahce, according to a report.

The Arsenal midfielder and his agent had claimed the 32-year-old would remain in north London until the summer on his £350,000-a-week contract.

However, the German stance changed earlier this month after offers from Fener and MLS arrived on the table.

Starved off football with Arsenal since last March, Ozil decided to come to an agreement on terminating his Arsenal deal.

Ozil, who was out of contract this June, had been left out of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads but was still training with the first team.

But he will now get a chance of first-team football with the Turkish giants, although his salary has been drastically reduced.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Ozil’s Fenerbahce deal is worth £3.5m a year or £67,300 a week – £282,000 less than he was on in London.

Ozil though will sign a three-and-a-half-year contract when he is officially unveiled this week.

And Ozil can add to his earnings with a series of add-ons in his deal.

If second-placed Fenerbahce win the Turkish Super Lig he is in line for a £445,000 bonus. And if Fener qualify for next season’s Champions League, which would require a top-two finish, Ozil will receive £222,000, per the source.

Arteta: ‘Mesut’s quality will be missed’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who banished Ozil from his first-team, said he would be missed after the win over Newcastle.

Arteta said: “Mesut is in Turkey going through the medical that has to be completed. There is still some paperwork that has to be done but it doesn’t matter – Mesut’s quality will be missed

“He’s a very special player who has a big history in this football club and if he ends up doing the deal when it happens I will give my clear opinion on that.”

Ozil said it was his “dream” to move to the Turkish side.

“I am very excited because I was always a fan of Fenerbahce. My dream comes true,” said Ozil.

“I am very excited to wear the Fenerbahce jersey. I hope we will be very successful with my team-mates.

“May God bless our fans, because they always support us. As I mentioned I am very happy to be here.

“I hope that I thank our fans with my good performance on the pitch.”
