Milan already in ‘frequent’ talks with Man Utd over permanent deal for star

AC Milan are keen to sign Diogo Dalot on a permanent basis from Manchester United – but will reportedly only be able to do so if they finish in the top four in Serie A.

Dalot joined Milan on a season-long from United during the summer transfer window. The full-back had struggled for regular gametime during his two seasons at Old Trafford.

Therefore, he chose a new adventure in Serie A, signing up with Milan. However, there is no formal option to buy in his contract.

That does not mean Milan will not be able to sign him – United were in a similar situation with Chris Smalling before he joined Roma permanently last season, for example – but strengthens his parent club’s hand in negotiations.

According to Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), Milan like what they have seen from Dalot so far, and are already thinking about a more permanent solution.

The 21-year-old has started two games in the Europa League for his new side, also making one Serie A appearance as a substitute. He has already provided one goal and one assist.

Therefore, Milan are already in “constant” talks with his agents, as well as “frequent” contact with Man Utd.

Champions League key for Milan

The Italian newspaper adds that Milan will only be able to comfortably afford Dalot if they qualify for the Champions League. That’s something they haven’t done since 2013-14, but they seem on course to return this year if they can keep up the form that has led them to the top of the formative Serie A table.

In the meantime, Italian representative Gabriele Giuffrida will be working to see if there is “room for negotiation” with Man Utd.

Dalot still has a contract at Old Trafford until 2023. He recently admitted that he was only thinking of Milan during his loan spell.

“When I signed for Milan, I had great motivations,” he said. “I only think of Milan now, my head is 100% here and I hope to do great things, achieving all our targets.”
