James Milner and Virgil Van Dijk were in a buoyant mood after Liverpool beat Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Allianz Arena to reach the quarter-finals.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring in the first half to give Liverpool a vital away goal, but the tie hung in the balance after Joel Matip sent the ball into his own net.
But Virgil Van Dijk put them ahead with a towering header from a corner in the 69th minute and 15 minutes later Mane added his second to put the tie beyond doubt.
“It was a good result,” said Milner speaking to BT Sport after the match. “We didn’t play our best but it is about defending well and getting three points,”
“This guy [Van Dijk] got another goal. To be honest, he should get more given his height!
To lose the captain that early was difficult but we dealt with it well,” he said, referring to Jordan Henderson being substituted early through injury. “Fabinho came on and did well then we scored.
“We don’t know who we are going to get in the next round but we have good feelings from last year so hopefully we can carry that on and go as far as we can.”
Van Dijk, who put in another exceptional performance in Liverpool’s backline as well as scoring a crucial goal,
“It is a great evening,” he said after the match. “We knew it would be tough as they have a great team with fantastic players.
“We were unlucky on their equaliser but we got the job done and we’re into the last eight.
“It is very important and it feels amazing to score. We need to cover him,” he said, on Andy Robertson’s suspension for the next game. “But we will prepare and make sure everyone is ready.”
