Rangers hotshot likened to former Man Utd, Chelsea man as LaLiga side plot bid

Alfredo Morelos, Borna Barisic

Atletico Madrid have their eyes on Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos and believe he could replicate Radamel Falcao’s achievements at the club, according to reports in Spain.

Morelos has built up quite the reputation at Ibrox since joining Rangers from HJK Helsinki in 2017 – scoring 77 goals in 134 appearances, an average of exactly one goal per two games.

The firebrand striker is also noted for his disciplinary record, having received several red cards over the past few seasons.

Nonetheless, several clubs are attracted by his goalscoring output, with Tottenham Hotspur being one of the Premier League sides to be linked back in January – before ultimately failing to bring in a recognised centre-forward as a replacement for the injured Harry Kane.

Now, reports from Spanish outlet AS claim that Morelos has been identified as a strike target by Atletico Madrid, who are preparing to replenish their attack for next season.

The future of Diego Costa is uncertain, and Atletico could choose to replace him with another hot-headed but prolific striker in Morelos.

The 23-year-old has particularly impressed in the Europa League this season, scoring 14 times in the competition – pedigree that makes Atletico receptive to his potential to play in a bigger league.

Morelos could follow in the footsteps of compatriot Radamel Falcao, who scored 70 goals in 91 appearances for Atletico in a spectacular two-year spell.

Whether Morelos could replicate those figures remains to be seen, but Atletico are interested in him as a project for the future.

In another Atletico Madrid story, the Spaniards are said to be monitoring West Ham defender Issa Diop. Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are all interested in keeping him in the Premier League, but Diego Simeone has three reasons to target the player.
