Mourinho asked whether Rashford and Martial can play together

Jose Mourinho has dispelled the myth surrounding Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial at his press conference today.

The two forwards have often found themselves replacing each other from the bench this season and many fans and pundits alike have questioned whether the two pacy attackers can play in the same United team.

Rashford, 19, and Martial 21, both started in the recent League Cup win away at Swansea though, and Mourinho made his feelings clear when he was asked at Monday’s press call whether the duo could play together.

Mourinho said: “We played Martial and Rashford together one week ago so they can play together. What you can’t do is play with 12. So we can repeat against Benfica or we can repeat against any other match.”

Mourinho also confirmed he would not be resting players for tomorrow’s Champions League tussle with Benfica with the weekend’s Premier League clash with Chelsea in mind.

“Nobody here thinks about any other match than Benfica. Nobody here thinks about Chelsea,” added Mourinho, who is likely to have the same squad available again.

“I think it is the same. We have one more training session to confirm but with the best scenario, it will be the same players we had at the weekend.

“Our aim tomorrow is to qualify. Ten points would be ok to qualify but our main aim is to finish first in the group.

“We know the stats are what they are but Basel has good results vs CSKA and Benfica. Benfica will give us a difficult match. They have their own ambition and pride and they will try to win, we just want to get to the last 16 by finishing first in the group.”

Manchester United can qualify for the knockout stages with nine points already in the bag in Group A. Benfica arrive bottom of the group without a point.
