Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho provided a peculiar response when asked about why he was in Belgium on Thursday.

Mourinho was spotted in the stands as Belgium beat Iceland 2-0 in the UEFA Nations League, with Michy Batshuayi scoring twice.

Neither Marouane Fellaini nor Romelu Lukaku were fit to feature for Roberto Martinez’s side, leading to speculation as to why Mourinho was there.

Rather inevitably, it was suggested that the Manchester United manager was in attendance on some sort of scouting mission.

The Portuguese spent part of the last international break watching reported transfer target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic play for Serbia.

With Toby Alderweireld lining up for Belgium on Thursday, it is likely that Mourinho was once again casting his eye over a player of potential interest.

The 29-year-old was expected to move on in the summer after a season which was disrupted by a hamstring problem. Manchester United were serious contenders for his signature, but Sky sources claimed United failed to agree terms with Tottenham for the transfer.

The Tottenham centre-half played the full 90 minutes as Belgium kept a clean sheet. However, when asked about his visit, Mourinho laughed off the question.
