Mourinho launches raid on Liverpool for regular with two desired qualities

Liverpool look increasingly likely to be deprived of Georginio Wijnaldum this summer after a surprise new suitor reportedly entered the race for his signature.

Wijnaldum remains a vital cog in Liverpool’s midfield and has worn the captain’s armband on a few occasions this season. But he has been unable to come to an agreement with the club over extending his contract. Barring a dramatic turn of events, he will leave the club as a free agent next month.

It had seemed likely that Barcelona would be his next destination. The Dutchman could have the opportunity to reunite with his former international boss Ronald Koeman as a result.

But there are doubts over Koeman’s future and that may impact Barcelona’s interest in Wijnaldum. Hence, the number of options opening up to him has increased recently.

For example, there were claims earlier this month that his agent had offered him to Bayern Munich. It followed previous reports of interest from Inter Milan.

But now, another Italian side has been mentioned as an option for the 30-year-old. According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Roma are interested in signing him.

The club from the capital are eager to show their ambition after appointing Jose Mourinho as their next head coach. The ex-Tottenham boss can attract players of the highest calibre and he has reportedly identified Wijnaldum as someone he wants.

Georginio Wijnaldum: No news on Liverpool future

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum says he has 'no news' on his future at the club with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

Those claims have since been backed up by another Italian source, Leggo, who add that Wijnaldum’s “muscles and lungs” are exactly what Mourinho wants.

He desires a “top player” to add to his midfield, and the Liverpool star would fit the bill.

There are two reasons the deal would be difficult for Roma, though. First, they cannot offer him Champions League football, and second, his wage demands may be too high.

But they are hoping to offer a three-year contract worth €4.5m per season, which may appeal considering Italy’s tax breaks for footballers moving to the country. Furthermore, the lure of Mourinho may attract Wijnaldum.

The reason he hasn’t signed on at Liverpool, though, is because he reportedly wants €10m per season. Hence, it seems Roma would have to make a very convincing pitch to tempt him.

But with time running out to decide his future, everything is still up in the air for Wijnaldum.

Liverpool learn midfielder price tag

As a result of the expectation that Wijnaldum will leave, Liverpool have been lining up some potential replacements.

There is one name that appears high up their wish list who could be keen to join a club of their stature.

But they have just found out that they will need to pay a hefty sum to sign him.
