Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho wants to sign the experienced Arturo Vidal to underpin his midfield, according to a report.
Michael Carrick will join the United coaching staff in the summer, while Marouane Fellaini’s contract expires and he will become a free transfer. Mourinho is hoping to keep hold of the Belgian enforcer, but the 30-year-old will likely have numerous offers to evaluate.
The Manchester Evening News claim the Portuguese boss will be looking to add at least one new face to his engine room this summer and Bayern Munich’s Vidal is the experienced man he wants at the helm.
And the addition of his Chile team-mate Alexis Sanchez to the United squad may well be the lure for Vidal to link up with Mourinho.
Vidal’s contract at Bayern runs until 2019 and the summer may well be the last chance Bayern have to get a return on the player they paid up to €40million for when he signed from Juventus in July 2015.
The German champions have also agreed a deal for highly-rated Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka and they may well be prepared to offload Vidal in the summer.
Vidal also played alongside Paul Pogba at Juventus and he may well fancy a return to playing alongside the France midfielder, as well as his compatriot Sanchez.
German outlet Bild claimed that United would rival Chelsea for Vidal in the January window.
Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes was asked by reporters about the rumoured Vidal interest earlier in the month and he denied a January exit was possible.
“There is no contact between Chelsea and Bayern,” he told reporters. “We will not sell Arturo or any other player for that matter during the winter break.”
Heynckes has said the player’s future will be determined in the summer with the Sun claiming in January Vidal was valued at £37.5million.
