Mourinho orders ‘dream’ Tottenham signing to fix alarming midfield flaws

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to fix two key flaws in his team’s midfield, according to a report.

Mourinho is gearing up for his first full season in charge of Spurs after taking over in November.

The Portuguese has work to do to build up Tottenham’s transfer budget, which would be increased through Champions League qualification.

Reports have already linked Tottenham with Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. But Foot Mercato now claims Milinkovic-Savic is the latest midfield target.

Signing the Serbia international would reportedly be a “dream” for Mourinho.

What’s more, Mourinho is concerned by a lack of “size” and power in his midfield, gaps he believes Milinkovic-Savic could fill.

The 25-year-old has only missed one of Lazio’s Serie A games this season, chipping in with five goals and five assists.

Indeed, he has proved crucial in Lazio’s push for the title – the club sit four points off leaders Juventus.

Foot Mercato adds that sales be important if Spurs are to finance the move.

Tottenham will be operating on a reduced budget due to the financial implications of the pandemic.

Mourinho reportedly has the backing of his technical staff in the hunt for Milinkovic-Savic.

As for Hojbjerg, Southampton have stripped him of the captaincy after he rejected the offer of a new deal.

Indeed, the midfielder’s current contract runs out next summer, meaning his departure in the coming months is likely.

Tottenham face Sheffield United on Thursday in a key match in their bid to qualify for the Champions League.

Spurs are ahead of the Blades by a point, although they will remain four points off Manchester United with victory.

Mauricio Pochettino was in charge the last time the teams met. In fact, the Argentine was sacked shortly after the 1-1 draw.

However, Mourinho has the boost of an almost fully-fit squad for the reverse fixture.
