Mourinho turns to classy Torino man amid fears over top Tottenham target

Sasa Lukic Torino midfielder

Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to bring Torino midfielder Sasa Lukic to Tottenham this summer after he emerged as an alternative to Marcel Sabitzer.

The Spurs boss is keen to strengthen his midfield options this summer and has targeted a deal for Sabitzer. The Austrian has been a standout performer for RB Leipzig in recent seasons, having signed from Rapid Vienna in 2014.

But with Sabitzer’s contract due to expire in 2022, his departure this summer looks increasingly likely. Indeed, sporting director Markus Krosche said recently that talks over an extension are on hold.

Last month it was claimed that Tottenham were at the front of the queue for Sabitzer in a £25m deal.

However, it might not be quite plain sailing for Tottenham, according to reports. Indeed, Spurs are not alone in their pursuit of Sabitzer. He has come under Liverpool’s watchful eye in recent weeks, while other interested parties are also expected to emerge. As such, chairman Daniel Levy is fearful his asking price could yet stretch beyond what Spurs are willing to pay.

Indeed, a report this week claimed Leipzig could seek as much as £45m for Sabitzer.

Furthermore, the failure to secure Champions League football would severely dent Tottenham’s chances of landing Sabitzer. While he has welcomed talk of a move to England, it’s believed he would want to sign for a side capable of offering him Champions League football.

Sabitzer has addressed claims over his future and admits winning trophies is his main motivation.

“Salary is not my main focus right now. I’m doing well enough, I don’t have to worry about it every day,” he said.

“I don’t play football to build a money bin after my career. I play for success. I’ve always been a winner, and I want to win trophies.”

With that in mind, Tuttomercatoweb, via the Daily Express, claims Spurs have turned their attention towards Lukic.

The 24-year-old has been a bright spark with Torino this season in their battle to beat relegation from Serie A. While only scoring three times this season, he has excelled in their midfield and has done well in battles against some more established performers.

The Serbian is rated at around £10m – a deal that would not break the bank.

And the Express claims Mourinho sees Lukic as a perfect addition to his midfield ranks alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele.

Palace also keen on Sasa Lukic

Tottenham, however, are not the only side keen on Lukic, with Crystal Palace also said to be on his trail.

Roy Hodgson’s side were reported to have seen a January approach for the midfielder knocked back. However, they reportedly remain keen and could launch a fresh bid for his signature come the summer.

There is, understandably, also said to be plenty of interest in Serie A too.

However, London is said to be his preferred destination and the offer of European football could swing the tide Spurs’ favour. That will be music to Levy’s ears too, especially amid claims the price for Sabitzer is set to increase.
