Mourinho unsure as doubt cast over Tottenham pursuit of Real Madrid star

Tottenham are unlikely to make a move for Eder Militao as conflicting claims about Jose Mourinho’s interest in the Real Madrid defender emerged.

Recent reports had suggested that Militao was on Spurs’ wishlist as they look for defensive reinforcements in January.

Mourinho has lost faith in Davinson Sanchez and could be looking for a replacement if the Colombian leaves. Possessing quality but lacking match sharpness, Militao would be an intriguing option.

Since joining Real Madrid for €50m in 2019, the Brazilian defender has struggled to cement his place in the side. This season, he has only made one start in La Liga so far.

Therefore, Madrid may be willing to let him leave if the price is right. Tottenham could be a contender and there have even been claims that Militao is the only signing Mourinho has asked for this month.

However, an update from transfer expert Duncan Castles suggests that Mourinho might not be that keen on the 23-year-old after all.

Castles told the Transfer Window Podcast: “Mourinho, I understand, does not feel that Militao fits the profile of player that Tottenham need.

“I.E, he doesn’t see him as the player who will come in and overhaul the defence, be a leader in the defence and take the team onto a different level.

“So then, were that deal to be done by the club I think it would be a compromise rather than an ideal scenario to happen. Therefore, I think you can regard this as pretty unlikely to happen.”

Militao could still be on the move

That casts doubt on Spurs’ hopes of finding an agreement for Militao. They are not the only suitor for the former Porto man, so could miss out.

It is not yet clear if Mourinho has other targets in mind if he decides to drop Tottenham’s interest entirely.

Perhaps the transfer chase is not over, though, as one theory about the summer signing of Gareth Bale suggests that Mourinho may not have the final say on all transfers.

However, if he does not want to sign Militao, then Tottenham may have to turn their attention to other targets.
