Manchester United will enjoy a “massive improvement” under new manager Jose Mourinho, according to the club’s legendary former boss Sir Alex Fergsuon.

Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s replacement in May, and was officially unveiled at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former manager Ferguson claimed that his old adversary will instigate an upturn in form at a club who have finished in the top four only once in the three seasons following his 2013 exit.

Mourinho has already made his mark at the club, exerting his dominance over captain Wayne Rooney.

The 74-year-old says that Mourinho will “do really well” upon his return to Premier League management, stating: “I think there’ll be a massive improvement.

“I think United is the right kind of club for him and I think he’ll do really well.

“He’s won the European Cup twice with different clubs and won titles with all the clubs he’s been at. You can’t ignore his record.”

Speaking about Mourinho’s return to Chelsea, which led to his sacking at the club for a second time in December 2015, Ferguson added: “I think Jose was wrong to go back. It’s always difficult when you go back somewhere for a second time.”
