Moyes aims barb at wasteful Pellegrini and only wants quality at West Ham

David Moyes is determined not to follow the example of previous West Ham managers and waste money on expensive failures.

The Hammers are in the market for a new striker after the departure of Felipe Anderson and Sebastian Haller. Brazil star Anderson managed only 10 goals from 63 Premier League appearances and was loaned to Porto in October.

Much was expected of Haller when he arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt in July 2019. But the Ivory Coast international showed little consistency and was sold to Ajax for €22.5m earlier this month.

The 26-year-old managed 10 league goals from 48 outings for the London Stadium club.

Michail Antonio is currently Moyes’ only recognised forward. The attacker has a history of injury problems and needs some help up front.

However, the manager has made it clear he will do his research before opening the club’s coffers. In addition to Haller and Anderson, signed by previous boss Manuel Pellegrini, there have been many recent flops recruited.

Javier Hernandez, Lucas Perez, Andre Ayew, Andy Carroll and Simone Zaza all arrived but failed to live up to the hype. And the Scot, with a thinly-veiled dig at his predecessor, will not be making the same mistake.

“What I don’t want to do is I don’t want to spend and waste my money, take a wage up bringing a player in, spend big money and find that actually, I’ve got it wrong,” he said. “I’d rather I waited and got someone who might be available in the summer.

“It’s difficult to say, but maybe in the past that may well have happened and I’m trying to be correct in as much as I can do.”

Striker bid rebuffed

West Ham have lodged a bid for Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri. It was immediately knocked back by the Spanish club, with their £27m offer said to be way short of his valuation.

Moyes appears satisfied with those he has recruited and will only open the cheque book when he finds the right man.

“No manager attempts to make a bad signing but I just want to try and make sure that any money I’m spending – because we don’t have a big pool of money – so I’m trying to spend it wisely,” he added.

“We’ve bought well with the likes of Vladimir Coufal, Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen. So I’ve got to make sure that I’m continuingly adding players of that ilk.”

West Ham are in action on Tuesday night when they face West Brom in the capital.
