Jurgen Klopp maintains that Liverpool have the squad strength to cope with Virgil van Dijk’s absence, despite calls for them to sign a replacement in January.

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher named Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano as a perfect replacement for the injured Dutchman, who looks set to miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

But speaking at his press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Ajax, a clearly irritable Klopp admitted he was happy with his squad.

“Is anyone interested in the game tomorrow? We went into season with 3 CBs and Fabinho. Difficult to have 4 world-class CBs.

“It’s not a position you rotate too much. If anyone tells us we make a mistake now…I think Carragher has.”

Klopp also confirmed that Joel Matip has been added to the injury list and will miss the game in Holland.

The defender suffered a muscle injury in the Merseyside derby draw.

Klopp added: “Yes, for sure it is not perfect. Joel Matip is not here, but that is our situation and we will deal with it.

“We are still a bit sensitive with the situation which is why we’re in a different mood to you. We’ve known since y’day the best CB in the world is not with us.

“It was clear with his history he wouldn’t start again after 90mins v Everton. But there’s a good chance he will be involved at the weekend.”

New look centre-back pairing

The absence of Van Dijk and Matip means the Reds are likely to line up with Joe Gomez and midfielder Fabinho in central defence.

Klopp also revealed that midfielder Thiago will be absent against Ajax. But he added that his side will still be out to win in Amsterdam.

“We still will try tomorrow. In the future we will miss him much more but so far, we’ve only played once with Thiago and we won some games without. On Virg, I’ve said everything.

“Thiago, not exactly sure how long that will take. But I like the team that we can line up.”
