Neville cites multiple reasons why ‘struggling’ Glazers must sell Man Utd

Laura Woods, Gary Neville - Sky Sports pundit unhappy at Arsenal postponement request

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville says he understands the frustration felt by fans protesting against the Glazer family at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Supporters waiting to watch the United – Liverpool Premier League clash invaded the pitch to vent their spleen about the club’s owners. It was in response to their part in the failed European Super League, which threatened the future of the sport.

Although the Red Devils joined the other five English clubs in withdrawing, the fans have not forgotten. And they have certainly not forgiven, with banners on the pitch demanding the Glazer family sell the club and move on.

While not condoning the fans’ action, Neville believes that it proves the depth of feeling against the owners involved. And the pundit feels it should further galvanise the footballing fraternity against perceived threats.

“All football fans should unite today behind what Manchester United fans have done today because what happened two weeks ago was really dangerous for English football,” he told Sky Sports. “There’s huge discontent. They’re basically saying enough is enough.”

And the former England defender pointed out just why there is such vitriol directed at the US owners.

“The Glazer family have been resilient and stubborn for many years,” he added. “I think they’re struggling for many, many years to meet the financial demands this club needs and have done for some time.

“This stadium, if you go behind the scenes, is rusty and rotting. The training ground is probably not even in the top five in this country. They haven’t got to a Champions League semi-final for 10 years and haven’t won the league for eight.

Why are top clubs attempting to form a breakaway European Super League? Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol explains.

“The land around the ground is undeveloped, dormant and derelict when every other club seems to be developing their facilities and their fan experiences.”

Neville wants Glazers to do ‘honourable’ thing

Neville has United in his blood after making 602 appearances and playing exclusively for the Premier League giants. He has become an outspoken pundit and pulled no punches in what he feels should now happen at Old Trafford.

“The Glazer family are struggling to meet the financial requirements and the fans are saying the time is up,” he continued. “They’re going to make a fortune if they sell this football club. If they were to put it up for sale now.

“I think the time would be right and it’d be the honourable thing to do.”
