Jamie Carragher TEAMtalk

Jamie Carragher has clarified his viewpoint on Liverpool’s defensive situation after Jurgen Klopp claimed that the Reds legend has made a “mistake” with his original comments.

Klopp used Tuesday’s press conference to question Carragher, who claimed that Liverpool need a “big” defensive signing.

The coach claimed it was difficult to have four world-class centre-backs, following Dejan Lovren’s summer exit. But he added that there are a “few reasons” why pundits like Carragher did not go into management.

Writing on Twitter after Klopp’s press conference though, Carragher clarified his original comments.

“Not once this season have I said it was a mistake for Klopp not to buy a centre-back for the exact reason he states,” the former defender wrote.

The clash comes after Liverpool lost Virgil van Dijk, who is likely to be out for the rest of the season. The Dutch defender has injured his anterior cruciate ligament, which requires surgery and intensive rehabilitation.

What’s more, Joel Matip has already shown his injury frailty and will not play against Ajax on Wednesday.

As such, Klopp must face arguably his biggest challenge in his five-year tenure as Liverpool boss. Indeed he will have to play long-term without Virgil van Dijk in the Premier League for the first time since January 2018.

Wading in on the debate, Gary Neville joked on Twitter that there is “in-fighting already”, with the Reds still in the early stages of their Premier League title defence.

However, Liverpool’s focus on Wednesday turns to the Champions League. Klopp’s men have – on paper – one of the easier groups and will be aiming to top Group D.

But Ajax – their first opponents – could prove a tricky side to get past.

Koulibaly one of four defenders linked to Liverpool

The Senegalese was on the market in the recent transfer window but no club reached Napoli’s asking price.

However one of Carragher’s suggestions for a Liverpool signing – Dayot Upamecano – is also mentioned.
