New price tag revealed as Borussia Dortmund cut Jadon Sancho demands

Borussia Dortmund have cut their asking price for Jadon Sancho to just £88m, according to reports.

Sancho was Man Utd’s top target last summer. However, they refused to meet Dortmund’s asking price of around £108m.

At the time, it seemed they may come to regret the decision. They were the only suitor in the race for Sancho during that transfer window, and the situation would change in future.

However, they may now be relieved that they did not pay such a high price for the England winger. Sancho has struggled so far this season.

It took him until January to score his first goal of the 2020-21 Bundesliga. His form has sparked since then, though, and he has three goals and seven assists to his name in the German top flight so far this term.

It is not yet clear if United will revive their interest. Some reports indicate that the Red Devils have enough faith in recent signing Amad Diallo to put their pursuit of Sancho behind them.

But if they do go back in for Sancho, it will cost them a fee closer to the one they wanted to pay in 2020.

Why Man Utd's Sancho pursuit failed

Why Man Utd's Sancho pursuit failed

Manchester United's failure to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund is analysed by Raphael Honigstein and Dharmesh Sheth on the Transfer Talk podcast.

According to Bild, Dortmund are now only asking for £88m for Sancho. The German club are feeling the financial effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and are expecting losses of £66m.

With that in mind, selling Sancho would balance the books. It has always seemed they knew they would not be able to keep hold of him forever, but they just wanted the right price.

Those demands have now had to change, which could put several top clubs across Europe on alert.

Other interest in Sancho

For example, in December, it was claimed that Liverpool and Chelsea had joined the race for the 20-year-old.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: “Next summer, I expect Jadon Sancho to leave the club and be back in the Premier League.

“We have to understand if Manchester United will arrive with €120m, if they will be ready this time to sign the player or if they’ll take the risk of other clubs joining the race.

“I will say like Liverpool, Chelsea, and a lot of clubs are scouting the situation of Jadon Sancho, so at this point the race is open.”
