New twist in saga of €60m winger wanted by Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool

Leon Bailey TEAMtalk

Bayer Leverkusen say they expect Leon Bailey to leave, but they have blocked a transfer in the January window.

TransferMarketWeb claim forward Bailey is still being tracked by Manchester United and Chelsea and that news has come less than a day after the Jamaican admitted that big clubs in England had been in contact with him.

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine Bailey claimed Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool had all approached his agent in recent years.

But any imminent move for 21-year-old, who has 13 goals and seven assists in 58 appearances for Bayer since transferring to the Bundesliga outfit from Genk in 2017, has been halted after talks between the club and his agent and stepfather Craig Butler.

With just five Bundersliga starts to his name this term, ESPN reported recently that Bailey would be looking at his January options if his game time did not improve, but that looks like having to wait until the summer at the earliest.

“The talks were good. We all know that Leon will move on one day,” Leverkusen sporting director Jonas Boldt told Bild. “But we made it clear that a winter transfer is out of the question. He also knows that he has our backing.”

Having impressed for Leverkusen in the first half of the 2017-18 season, Bailey has been struggling for form since February and has scored only one goal in a total of 14 appearances across all competitions this season.

Bailey only renewed his contract until 2023 in August and is rated in the €60m bracket by the German club.
