Newcastle aim to keep Sissoko and sign six

Newcastle are expected to speak to both Vieira and Steve McClaren this week after narrowing their search for a new manager down to three names with the hope of making an appointment before the end of the week.

The Magpies are making transfer plans in the meantime and, according to the Newcastle Chronicle, intend to sign six new players this summer, with another couple of up-and-coming players also being looked at.

The club have also privately outlined a determination to keep Sissoko at St James’ Park, it is claimed, following midweek talks between owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley.

Sissko has already confirmed he is happy to remain at Newcastle: “I still have four years on my contract and I am very happy to be staying here. I am going to have one week off now, and then after that I will be joining up with the national team. I will be back in Newcastle in July and I am still here and still happy,” he said.

“This is a big club with good players and fantastic fans. Maybe we have to play with more confidence next season, like we did against West Ham.”
