Newcastle book date with Watford after cup replay win at Blackburn

Newcastle will take on Watford in the FA Cup 4th round after they won 4-2 after extra-time in their 3rd-round replay at Blackburn.

After the game finished 2-2 in normal time, the Premier League side struck twice in the extra period to progress in the competition.

Newcastle took an early lead as Longstaff scored his first senior goal for the club, the 21-year-old finding the net inside the first minute with a deflected strike from outside the area.

Roberts also scored his first Newcastle goal as he made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute, volleying home after being picked out by Jacob Murphy’s cross from the right.

Blackburn pulled a goal back 12 minutes before half-time through former Newcastle forward Armstrong, who beat goalkeeper Freddie Woodman after being played in by Danny Graham.

Darragh Lenihan got Blackburn level in first-half stoppage time, the Republic of Ireland international heading in from Harrison Reed’s corner to make it 2-2 after an entertaining first period.

The second half failed to produce the same drama, although still entertaining, and the game ended up going to extra-time.

With the tie then seemingly drifting towards a penalty shoot-out, Newcastle took the game by the scruff of the neck either side of half-time in extra-time.

Firstly Joselu swept in after Rovers keeper Raya fumbled Fabian Schar’s effort and then Ayoze Perez smashed an effort past Raya, who got a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out.

Rafa Benitez’s men will now take on fellow Premier League side Watford at St James’ Park on January 26.
