Rangers have reportedly already offered Newcastle United target Danilho Doekhi a contract offer after his decision to leave Vitesse this summer.
Doekhi, 22, has been with Vitesse since 2018 and attracted attention with his displays at the back. The former Netherlands Under-21 ace has one year left on his deal. But he has reportedly decided that the current campaign will be his last at GelreDome.
Attention has already turned to a possible next destination, with Fulham joining the Magpies in showing an interest. But it seems as though the Gers have stolen a march on the Premier League pair by making him an offer.
De Gelderlander are reporting that the Glasgow giants will offer the defender a three-year contract at Ibrox. However, he is still employed by Vitesse at present and the Eredivisie outfit will look for the highest price possible.
That might not come from north of the border and so any offer from the blue half of Glasgow may come to nothing. Doekhi is from solid footballing stock as he is the nephew of former Chelsea, Barcelona and Milan player Winston Bogarde.
He has made 74 Dutch top-flight appearances for the Arnhem-based club. The talented youngster has enjoyed 28 league starts in 2020-2021, helping his side to fourth in the table.
But, if reports are to be believed, this will be his last season for the club.
Rangers a tough call for Doekhi
Steve Gerrard’s side have already romped to the Scottish Premiership title. Still unbeaten in the league, they have based their success on a solid defence.
April 26 Transfer Chatter: Willock, Belotti, Sule, Azpilicueta news
Arsenal will demand £25m from Newcastle for Joe Willock, Liverpool are considering a cut-price move for Torino striker Andrea Belotti and Atletico Madrid are ready to take advantage of Chelsea’s interest in Niklas Sule by moving for Cesar Azpilicueta.
And it is by no means certain that Doekhi would be able to command a first-team berth. Therefore a move to St James’ Park might be a better option.
A late-season rally means it is likely that Steve Bruce’s side will be in the Premier League next term. Despite uncertainty over the club’s ownership, it seems likely they will recruit in the off-season.
The Cottagers are near certainties to drop into the Championship and so their interest might be over. Wherever he ends up, Doekhi will bring plenty to the party.
Vitesse coach, Thomas Letsch, is a big fan and feels he is the equal of most around.
“Danilho is one of the best defenders in the league,” he said.
