New Premier League suitor enters race for £25m Liverpool midfield star

Newcastle United are looking to make Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri one of the first signings of their new era if their takeover goes through, according to reports.

A Saudi-backed consortium is currently in the process of a potential takeover of the Newcastle ownership, prompting the club to be linked with some big moves in the transfer market.

Major names such as Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez and Juventus’ Gonzalo Higuain are among the most ambitious rumoured targets, but Newcastle could look within the Premier League to bolster their ranks.

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies have outlined Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri as a potential signing – with the Switzerland international struggling to nail down a regular place at Anfield.

Shaqiri has found opportunities hard to come by since his 2018 move from Stoke City, especially this season – although he did show some promise throughout parts of last season.

An exit was touted in January, before Jurgen Klopp decided to keep hold of as many options as possible as Liverpool closed in on a potential first league title of the Premier League era.

However, Shaqiri could be on the move at the end of the season, and the Mail believe that Newcastle are already in touch with his representatives, having learned that Liverpool will not stand in his way this time – although previous reports have indicated they will ask for around £25m for his signature.

Newcastle are only the latest in a long list of potential suitors for Shaqiri, with Sevilla tempted to revive their January interest and Turkish side Galatasaray also ready to enter the race.
