Newcastle agree loan deal in principle for Man Utd defender

Newcastle United have agreed a loan deal in principle to sign Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams, claims a report.

The Shields Gazette claim the Geordies are in pole position to land the 20-year-old, who has been given the green light to leave on loan this month.

Steve Bruce’s side are understood to have the “framework” for a deal in place, although there is plenty of competition for the young full-back.

Bruce admitted last week that the club were working on transfers.

“We’ve got one or two things (going on),” Bruce said.

“We all know how difficult January is. Last year we brought in three loan signings which really, really helped us.

“That’s an avenue we’ll go down.”

Sky in Germany have claimed that Bayer Leverkusen are also keen on Williams, while Sky Sports also report interest from Southampton.

Magpies chase Jetro Willems

Williams made over 30 appearances for United last season, but this term his path has been blocked by Luke Shaw and Alex Telles.

The player himself alluded to an uncertain future in an Instagram post on New Year’s Day, claiming it was a “mystery” what 2021 had in store for him.

The report also claims that Newcastle are also interested in a deal for Jetro Willems.

The former loanee is fit at Eintract Frankfurt and with his contract expiring in the summer he could move on this month.

It seems certain that Bruce will add a left-back in January with £15m summer recruit Jamal Lewis struggling to acclimatise to the Premier League.
