Wilfried Zaha

Newcastle could look to make Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha the first big-money signing of their new era, according to one football pundit.

Good times look like they are just round the corner at Newcastle with the Mike Ashley era almost at an end with a Saudi-led takeover set to be completed within the next fortnight, it has been revealed.

The PA news agency understands the Premier League’s owners and directors test is the final hurdle to clear before the £300million deal is complete.

The new owners will put Newcastle as the Premier League club with the wealthiest owners – and a host of exciting names have since been linked.

Dries Mertens, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edison Cavani and Philippe Coutinho are just four such players linked with highly-lucrative moves to the North-East of England as a result of the Saudi takeover.

However, Darren Bent believes Newcastle could look to poach the best stars from their Premier League rivals first – starting with a serious play for former Manchester United winger Zaha in a deal that would shatter their club record.

Zaha is reportedly on a massive £130,000 a week deal at Selhurst Park and Newcastle would have to raise that considerably to lure him to St James’ Park – and Bent feels this is something that can be done.

“I know a lot of guys think Newcastle is so far north but it’s an excellent place to live. Great place, nice restaurants, lively nightlife, it’s bubbly and it’s passionate,” Bent told Football Insider.

“If they can go and get someone like Wilfried Zaha, that would be tempting. Money talks, we know that. He’s on what, £100,000-a-week now? If Newcastle offer him more, you’re not asking him to move to Mars!”

A graduate of Palace’s youth system, Zaha – rated at around £100m by the Eagles – spent two seasons with Man Utd before returning to Selhurst Park in 2015.

Since then, the Ivorian has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most tricky wingers, scoring 56 goals and setting up a further 70 in the 353 appearances he has made for the Eagles.

In other Newcastle news, the Magpies are believed to be looking to strike a deal for an outstanding young PSG talent.
