Newcastle told they must double opening offer to sign Prem ace as Chelsea inadvertently ruin Howe plans

Tino Livramento and Luke Thomas, Southampton vs Leicester

Newcastle United have been told they must seriously up their bid if they are going to sign Tino Livramento from Southampton, according to a trusted source.

Newcastle have identified Livramento as a potentially great addition to their right-back options. Eddie Howe’s first-choice player in the position is Kieran Trippier, but he is seriously lacking a deputy.

The manager is hoping to get rid of Javier Manquillo, while Emil Krafth is still recovering from an ACL injury. Harrison Ashby is also in the squad, although he is deemed too inexperienced ahead of an important season in both the Premier League and Champions League.

As Trippier is 32 years old, Newcastle ideally want to sign someone who can compete with him for a starting spot immediately and then eventually become his successor in the team. And this is where Livramento comes in.

The England U21 international joined Southampton from Chelsea in August 2021. As per The Guardian, the Saints paid just £5million for him.

Livramento enjoyed a brilliant debut season at St Mary’s, but he suffered an ACL tear in April 2022 and this saw him miss pretty much all of the 2022-23 campaign.

Livramento is now working his way back to full fitness, but he might not be playing in a Southampton shirt next term. According to Tuesday’s Transfer Gossip, which cites a report from The Telegraph, Newcastle are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign the 20-year-old. They want to capitalise on Southampton’s relegation to the Championship by offering the player the chance to continue shining in the top flight.

The report claimed Southampton value Livramento at £30m, whereas Newcastle only want to spend £15m on him. Nevertheless, there was thought to be confidence that the two clubs would be able to reach an agreement.

Newcastle deal now appears troublesome

However, The Athletic have now provided a report which contradicts what The Telegraph claimed. And it seems the transfer may be far harder to pull off than originally thought. The Athletic reveal Newcastle’s opening bid has come in at £23m. But this has been pushed back as Southampton are seeking way more for the starlet.

When Livramento swapped Chelsea for Southampton, the West London side included a significant sell-on clause in the deal. As such, with Southampton wanting to receive £25m on their own for him, Newcastle have been told to pay a whopping £50m in order to complete a deal.

That is more than double what Newcastle were originally hoping to spend on Livramento. Due to this, it is now likely Newcastle will walk away from the negotiations.

While Newcastle have huge spending power thanks to their super rich owners, they do not want to massively overpay for players and also do not want to get in trouble with Financial Fair Play regulators.

Following the £60m outlay on Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali, Newcastle chiefs will not want to fork out a further £50m on Livramento.

Another factor to consider is that Livramento would not actually go straight into Newcastle’s starting eleven, making the huge fee seem even more crazy. As a result, Newcastle will now search for alternative right-backs who can be signed for in the region of £20m.

Meanwhile, Newcastle and West Ham could miss out on a Ligue 1 star to Manchester United, according to a report.
