Newcastle United have moved to the front of the queue in the race to sign former Manchester City winger Jesus Navas, according to reports.
The Spaniard is a free agent after leaving the Etihad Stadium in the summer and a return to his homeland with Sevilla had seemed most likely.
However, the Daily Mirror claims that the La Liga club aren’t prepared to pay Navas the wage he demands with Sevilla not offering over £1.3million a year.
A source close to Sevilla told the Daily Mirror: “If he decides not to come back it is not a problem.”
And it’s understood that Navas will have to make up his mind quickly with the club setting a deadline of next Sunday to decide whether he wants to move.
Newcastle, who won the Championship last campaign, are thought to be ready to swoop with a ‘proposal’ sent to Navas’ representative.
