Next Tottenham striker: Postecoglou wants lethal attacker who bettered Salah, Rashford as Harry Kane chooses between two clubs

Harry Kane has chosen which European giant he wants to join out of two options this summer, and the decision has forced Tottenham to identify a Premier League striker as his replacement, according to reports.
The transfer rumours surrounding Kane have begun to heat up in the last few days. Over the weekend, honorary Bayern president Uli Hoeness claimed the England star had ‘made up his mind’ that he wants to sign for the German giants next.
Hoeness’ comments left Tottenham ‘surprised’, as they feel like they still stand a good chance of keeping Kane.
But on Monday, the race for his signature got even busier as Paris Saint-Germain signalled their desire to land him as a replacement for Kylian Mbappe. It was also claimed PSG could offer returning star Xavi Simons as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Kane.
According to this morning’s update from The Telegraph, Kane is ‘not interested’ in signing for PSG and instead wants a Bayern transfer to reach completion.
And with Kane making his exit wish known, Spurs have had to start looking for his goal-scoring successor. One player they have their eye on is Lille ace Jonathan David, but Football Transfers state they could actually pursue a Prem striker instead.
The man in question is Brentford’s Ivan Toney. He had an exceptional season in 2022-23, netting 20 league goals in 33 matches. That is more Prem strikes than Manchester United star Marcus Rashford and Mo Salah of Liverpool, with only Kane and Erling Haaland managing more than Toney last term.
Spurs have a long-standing interest in the Bees star. Spurs tried to sign Toney previously after he was recommended to club chairman Daniel Levy by David Pleat, the former Spurs manager.
Tottenham deciding when to bid for Ivan Toney
In the end, Spurs captured Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica. That move did not work out however and Spurs have been left regretting their snub of Toney.
The report claims there are now two options facing Spurs. One is that they go all out for Toney this summer, despite his ban as a result of betting breaches.
Alternatively, if Kane stays, then Spurs could wait until the next January window before landing Toney. This is when the 27-year-old is allowed to be fully involved with football again after his ban.
As Kane’s contract expires in June 2024, a January swoop for Toney would give him six months to learn from his England team-mate before becoming his true successor ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
