Leicester are eyeing a move for Ajax left back Nicolas Tagliafico as a replacement for Chelsea-bound Ben Chilwell, according to a report on the Daily Mail.
Chilwell is understood to be on the verge of completing his £50million move to Stamford Bridge. The defender has been linked with the Blues for a number of months and a deal is now finally close to getting over the line.
Checks are being carried out on the injury that kept him out of Leicester’s final games of last season. However, that is not expected to derail the transfer.
Therefore, Brendan Rodgers is now on the look out for a new left-sided fullback ahead of the new campaign. And Tagliafico is reportedly the number one target to take Chilwell’s place having impressed in Holland in recent years.
The 27-year-old has made 99 appearances for Ajax since joining in January 2018, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists in that time. He has also won a league title and reached the Champions League semi-final.
With almost 300 senior appearances at club level and 25 caps for Argentina, Tagliafico would provide plenty of experience to the Foxes’ lineup.
Some reports suggest that negotiations are already underway between Leicester and the Eredivisie club.
It is unclear how much Ajax would demand for Tagliafico, whose contract expires in 2022. Money is unlikely to be an issue though, with the fee set to be received for Chilwell putting Leicester in a strong position to afford their top target.
No Champions League could be an issue
One potential stumbling block in Leicester’s swoop for the defender is their lack of Champions League football. Poor form in the second half of the season cost the Foxes their place in the top four.
And the report adds that could put Tagliafico off of a move to the King Power as he wants to play at that level. He could do that by staying at Ajax, whose place in the group stages is already confirmed.
He has also been linked with Spanish sides Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. They have also qualified for Europe’s elite club competition having finished second and third in La Liga respectively.
