Solskjaer issues message to Man Utd fans over controversial chants

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called on those fans singing about the club’s hierarchy in the win over Tranmere Rovers to “stay together” in order to help the club move forward.

Sections of the United support could be heard singing about executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the Glazer family, who own the Red Devils, in the 6-0 thrashing of Tranmere on Sunday.

The chants could also be heard in the defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford earlier in the week, when many United fans left the ground early amid the Clarets’ first win away to United in 62 years.

Asked by BT Sport after the game for a message to those fans singing the chants, Solskjaer said: “”We’ve just got to stay together and keep working. We’ve got to try to win the next one and the next one after that and get the good times back.”

On the pitch, it was one of the brighter days for United as they had six different goalscorers, with Harry Maguire scoring his first for the club.

It was 5-0 before half-time with fellow defenders Diogo Dalot and Phil Jones also scoring, before Mason Greenwood slotted home a penalty in the second half.

Asked about what aspect of his side’s performance he was most proud of, Solskjaer said: “I think the players, the way they went about that game on that pitch.

“They played football the way it should be played and it was an exceptional performance at times because that pitch was very difficult to play on.

“We’re playing against a League One team and I just thought the attitude was spot on. That’s all you can ask for, when the attitude is right as a manager you can’t fault them.

“I think if you go into the trap of playing long balls and making this game a fight, we’re not used to that. We’re not used to all the challenges and they would have been better suited than us.

“So we just asked ours to play and it went well.”

United’s next game sees them face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, having lost 3-1 at Old Trafford in the first leg.
