Hargreaves concerned by two Chelsea dilemmas created by Werner deal

Timo Werner TEAMtalk

Pundit Owen Hargreaves says he is “curious” to find out how Timo Werner will fit into Frank Lampard’s plans at Chelsea next season.

Chelsea became the exciting talking point last week when reports claimed they had agreed a deal to sign Werner.

The RB Leipzig striker appeared to make Liverpool his top target and he had reportedly held talks with Jurgen Klopp.

However, the 24-year-old’s move to Stamford Bridge on a five-year contract could be announced this week.

Werner’s arrival adds to an exciting array of talent at Lampard’s disposal from next season.

Hakim Ziyech will also be arriving from Ajax, with Tammy Abraham, Callum Hudson-Odoi also fighting for game time.

Speaking to BT Sport about the reported deal, Hargreaves said that Werner would be a “terrific signing” for Chelsea.

However, he is also keen to find out how Lampard will use him in his team.

“Well I think he’s perfect, I think he could have been perfect for Man United as well but I think it’s brilliant for Frank Lampard and Chelsea,” the former midfielder said.

“A proven goalscorer but the curious thing for me is how he fits in with Tammy Abraham, because I love Tammy’s game and I think he’s been tremendous.

“So maybe Timo Werner can play off the left side at times but they have multiple players there for those positions, with [Callum] Hudson-Odoi and [Christian] Pulisic.

“But it’s a terrific signing for Chelsea, I think they needed to make a statement and they’ve done that.

“To go with [Hakim] Ziyech and all these terrific young players, I think Chelsea are building something, not to compete next season for the Premier League but definitely in two or three years’ time to compete to win the Premier League.

“Terrific signing, I think Chelsea fans are going to love him.”

CHELSEA’S BUSY SUMMER?

A report has claimed that Chelsea want two marquee signings this summer.

As well as Werner, Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell is reportedly a top target but he is worth around £85million.

Chilwell has become a vital part of Brendan Rodgers’ side at the King Power Stadium in the past 14 months.

The England international is also attracting interest from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
